Cozy Living - For a Couple and their Four Dogs

I haven't blogged in a while because I've been in Los Angeles finishing up a project.  These are some quick shots from the California home.  The client loves Chinese and ethnic decor and wanted a blue and white scheme.  Four dogs have run of the house so I chose beige fabrics instead of white.  I also made sure the area rugs contained pattern to hide all the dogie hair.  In a prior post I spoke about the importance of quality area rugs, and that they will last a lifetime and beyond.  The area rug for the family room is a good example of this.  An Oushak wool rug from Pakistan was the perfect choice for the space because of the vibrant blue color and graceful patterns it contained.  The coffee table is very durable and will hold up to any dog jumping on it since it's made from reclaimed wood and steel.

Continuing the blue theme in the bedroom, I introduced chocolate also.  The contrast of white, chocolate and blue creates interest and a sense of playfulness.  Here, I found zinc bedside tables to flank the wood sleigh bed, and blond wood antique Tibetan finials that I converted into lamps.  Keeping with the semi exotic feeling, I hung blue Cameroon head dresses on the wall and added a zebra bench and Moroccan pouf.  The pull and play of different materials and fabrics is key to achieving a cozy atmosphere.

For the powder room, I felt my clients needed a little drama and the illusion of more space, so I suggested the mosaic glass tile wall which reflects the glow of the sconces beautifully.  I removed an old fashioned vanity that was too wide and much too tall for the room, which was crowding the area.  I replaced it with a custom concrete vessel sink which sits on top of a simple cabinet.  The large early American mirror from Pennsylvania along with the polished nickel accents completes the small space.

Objects from different corners of the globe with casual fabrics and materials bring cozy living to this family of six.

Go Gloss

High gloss painted walls add so much drama to interiors.  It's a very smart way to jazz up your space while keeping the cost down.  Glossy finishes are especially ideal for bathroom walls, since the finish allows for easy clean up with a damp sponge or cloth.  If you feel inspired to take on a project like this yourself, be sure your walls are patched and as smooth as possible because any bump or imperfection will be magnified by the gloss and reflection. Also use a very good quality brand paint.  However, I recommend hiring a professional to tackle this job and ask if they would spray the walls instead of brush and roller.  This technique is the most effective in delivering that look of shiny glass!  Go gloss for drama, glamor and sophistication.

The Stone Man In Sleepy Hollow

Old cemetery's are so exciting and beautiful to me, filled with so much mystery and peace. When ever I travel through old small towns I always feel an urge to seek out the local cemetery. When ever I visit them, I feel like an innocent child again wondering through a labyrinth of stone and decay, like I'm in my own little fairy tale story. Being such a visual person I'm always drawn to the way the light reflects off the textured tomb stones, and statuary. The way the sun light finds its way through the wind blown trees creating that harmonious natural shadow dance on the hand carved mounds of rock. On one of my recent trips to upstate NY I passed through the town of Sleepy Hollow and like a mad man, when I came upon the cemetery I anxiously swerved the car into the entrance of the grounds. It was a beautiful fresh day, the leaves where still glistening from the rain storm that just passed through, and the light and shadows were just perfection. Amongst all of the ancient statuary, I came upon this huge stone man beautifully carved and proportioned. I was able to get some great photographs of him. My plan is to get the photographs blown up to a large scale, mount them on linen and have them framed. If they come out great, I will offer a limited amount on Kerut Home. I'm thinking they'll look lovely above my living room sofa! A little bit of fairy tale in the home...
