How to Avoid Static Hair

Summer's pesky humidity which turns our hair to frizz gives way to an equally annoying problem in the winter: static hair. The dry air and cold temps are yet another challenge, especially if you're headed to Sundance or on a ski trip. Here are the best ways we've found to combat those flyaways:

1. Moisture is a natural static killer. Keep your hair well moisturized with a deep conditioner a couple of times each week. We use Phytojoba Intense Hydrating Mask (available at Sephora for $38) for soft, shiny hair. Also, don't wash your hair as often. Not only does washing dry your hair out, so does using the hair dryer.

2. Use a good leave-in conditioner. We like the Aveeno's products because they're easy to find, easy on the wallet, have spray-on application, and leave our hair silky.

3. Use a styling product like Morrocanoil (at salons and on line) which imparts shine and protects your hair from the dryer. That extra layer of product repels those pesky protons which make your hair stand on end.

4. Use a natural bristle brush which distributes the oils in your hair from root to end better than a synthetic brush. Like Morrocanoil, your own oils protect your hair.

5. The old-school method of getting rid of static by spraying your brush with hairspray doesn't work if there's alcohol in the hairspray. It'll only dry your hair out further and attract more static.

Hair Day Forecast

One of the trickiest things about traveling is figuring out how to do your hair in a new and different city. Is it going to be hot and humid? Cold and windy? And how do we do our hair in either situation? The new Brilliant Color and Beauty Today Hair Day Forecast takes some of the guess work out of it for us. You simply select your hairtype (straight, wavy, curly) plug in the zip code and you get a personalized tip to help your hair look its best, no matter what the elements. Why didn't we think of this sooner?

Suave Girls Getaway

For my friend Felissa's bachelorette party in Philly, I was lucky enough to host a Suave party for all the girls. Suave sent over hairstylist Andre Richard from the Andre Richard Salon to do our hair before our big night on the town.

That's Andre blowdrying the bride's, Fellisa, hair.

That's the bride below with her hair setting in pin curls with room service.

The Volumizing Hair Spray was everyone's favorite product. Even the hairstylists took a can!

End of Summer Beauty Tips

After a long weekend in Montauk, followed by five nights in St. Lucia, our skin and hair have about had it! It's time to seriously hydrate every inch of our bod. Here are a few of our fave beauty products we're spritizing and slathering all over:

Clinique's Moisture Surge has long been a favorite, so it's no surprise that the new Clinique Moisture Surge Spray is top on our end of summer beauty tips list. The aloe and water based spray is labeled as "thirsty skin relief". You can spritz it on anytime-before applying moisturizer, after a long plane ride or on top of makeup, like we did just now. Ahhh....

For our sun-dried skin, we're slathering on Votre Vu's On Holiday Moisturizing Body Spray after every shower. Not only does it contain grape seed, sweet almond, apricot and jojoba oil, when we close our eyes, we can still hear the waves crashing in the background.

Last but not least, we usually run from deep conditioners like the Wicked Witch of the West runs from water, but after days of using the Caribbean Sea as our only hair product, even we had to admit it was time to call in reinforcements. We reached for our bottle of Kim Vo Brilliant Luster Glaze
and our locks are as good as new. Our hair color is another story--we should have used the UV protecting product before we hit the beach. Good thing our colorist is on speed dial!

With a little help, we're going to make this the year we stop aging yet!

Ojon Leave-in Glossing Cream

We're big fans of Ojon's natural hair care products, especially their dry shampoo.  Our latest discovery is the Ojon Leave-in Glossing Cream which can be used on damp hair as a styling cream to add shine and control, or on dry hair as a finishing cream to add texture.  We loved the scent (somewhere between nutty and vanilla); the way it control our static and flyaways; and the smoothness and shine on our ends.

You can find Ojon's Glossing Cream at Sephora, Ulta, QVC and www.ojon.com/. $30 for 4.25 oz.

Kim Vo's Hair Travel Tips

The other week, we had the chance to interview celeb colorist Kim Vo about his styling secret for girls on the go:

Sun Care for Your Hair

Aveda Sun Care
We're always preaching to you about the importance of slathering on your sunscreen; but we rarely mention your hair.  While your scalp is at risk for the same skin damage as the rest of your body, your hair is different: it can dry out, lose its color, and bleach out.

Aveda stylist, Maria Heille, recommends Aveda's Sun Care line.  Before you spend the day outside, spritz on the Protective Hair Veil for hours of protection against the sun,  use the Hair and Body Cleanser to remove chlorine from the pool or salt from the sea, and try an After-Sun Hair Masque to restore the moisture to your hair after a day in the sun.

Don't forget to pack a hat on your way to the beach too!  It's a full proof way to block the harmful effects of the sun.

Men and Short Hair: What Do They Really Think?

We've always heard that men prefer longer hair.  We've had our hair long for most of our lives, only once or twice cutting it short.  We'd like to think that we're not wearing our hair long just for the men in our lives; but because it flatters us.  Daily Makeover's Sarah Mansour took a closer look and reported back to us.  Read more here.

Donate Your Hair to Help the Gulf Coast

A few of our friends have posted on Facebook lately that you can donate your hair to help soak up the oil from the massive spill in the Gulf Coast. Regular JSG readers know that we are big supporters of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast area, so we investigated to find out if this is more than urban legend. Turns out, it's true!

We asked Sadah Saltzman, Stylist and Makeup Artist at Salon AKS in New York, who verifies,

"Hair naturally absorbs oil, which is why we shampoo our hair. So, hair is a perfect absorbent for petrolatum oil. And, when woven into mats, it  acts like a sponge, picking up access oil."

You don't need to majorly chop your hair, any size clippings will do--even dog hair works! The only restriction is the hair has to be clean so it can soak up the oil. Salon AKS is participating in the donation program.

Read on for more about how to donate your hair to help the Gulf Coast Oil Spill.
